medicalholodeck user manual

Medicalholodeck is the DICOM Viewer for medical Human Anatomy in Virtual Reality/VR.

In life size, high level of detail and real 3D.

1.
How to use the DICOM viewer for VR:
The Virtual Reality Controllers

Medicalholodeck DICOM viewer is using HMD's from HTC Vive and other manufacturers to navigate the software. The most important tools are the laser on controller 1 and the plane cutter on controller 2, see images.

VR Controller 2: the Plane Cutter and the Filter Tools. Set a cut with the trigger, release it with a click on the 'X'

2.
VR Controller 1 & 2: the Laser and the Plane Cutter

Take controller 1 in your right hand and controller 2 in your left hand. Use the Laser on controller 1 to move the DICOM file and to activate any button, either on the User Interface on the Wall or on controller 2. Point the laser on the respective button and click the trigger button with your index finger.
On controller 2, the plane cutter is activated by default. Use this tool to cut and slice the DICOM file. Turn and rotate the cutter in any direction. Set a cut by clicking the trigger button on controller 2. To release a cut on a DICOM file, aim with the laser on the 'X' of the cut and click the trigger button on controller 1.

3.
Rotating the DICOM file

Use the touch panels on both controllers to rotate the DICOM file in the various axis. The touch panels are sensitive - if you move the thumb to the center, the rotation is slow. On the outside border of the panel, the rotation is faster.

4.
Change the Size of a DICOM file

Use the scaling function either on the controller UI or on the wall to change the size of a DICOM file. Scale 1 is the original body size.
Scaling up a DICOM file has a influence on your computer's performance: check the framerate on wall. To not get nausea, try to keep the framerate at least at 20-25 fps.

5.
Change the Quality of a DICOM file

Change the level of visual quality depending on your computer’s performance. Use either the button on the wall or on the side of your left VR controller. Check the framerate on the wall.

6.
Windowing and filtering of a DICOM file

Change the displayed tissue density values in real time with the windowing functions. Move the slider with the laser - either on your controller 2 or on the Wall. The values you see are in Hounsfield Units (HU).
We created 3 separate filter layers which can be turned on and off. You can also switch between absolute and relative color values.

7.
Compare several DICOM files

Medicalholodeck DICOM viewer lets you compare and work on up to three DICOM files at the same time. Activate a slot by clicking on it with the laser on controller 1, then choose a DICOM file from the library wall to your right. Each slot can use a different color preset, size etc. Your changes will be saved in the library wall in combination with the respective slot.

8.
Load your own DICOM files and animated (4D) DICOM file sets

Medicalholodeck DICOM viewer for VR comes with several high resolution DICOM files preloaded - a human head, heart, lung, and female and male human anatomies. If you want to work on your own DICOM files, you can load them into the library wall on your right side. Click on one of the empty slots and navigate to your stored DICOM file. All the scanned DICOM slices of one set need to be in a single document folder. If there are two scans in the same folder, separate them first. To delete the data, select the red X with the laser on controller 1.
You can also load animated DICOM files. For this, prepare each frame of the DICOM animation in a own folder and load the overlying folder into the library. Adjust the speed of the animation on the controller wall.
